This photograph shows the site of the Battle of Al Khandaq (the Trench), which took place in spring 5AH/627. This was the third time that the Muslims of Madinah were attacked by a much larger force, led by the people of Makkah. To halt the advance of the Makkan cavalry, the Prophet (PBUH) suggested they dig a trench across the only open area, just north of Madinah; the task was complete in six days. After a siege of 27 days the defenders of Madinah were successful. The site is also known as the place of the Seven Mosques (Sabaa Masajid), from the seven small commemorative mosques that were built here.
