Part of the old city walls of Madinah, with the remains of a tower on the right, still standing when Mohammad Helmi photographed them in 1947. On the other side of the walls stands the Sayidna Uthman ibn Affan mosque, named after a companion of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) who became the third Caliph of Islam ( 644 – 656 ). The site on which the mosque was built was one of those where the Prophet (PBUH) performed Eid prayers.
