Jabal Uhud, a red granite mountain ridge lying just north of Madinah, extends 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) in length, 2 to 3 kilometers (1.2 to 1.9 miles) in width, and rises to 1,077 meters (3,533 feet). On 19 March AD 625 it was the site of the Battle of Uhud, the second occasion when the early Muslim community of Madinah, led by the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), fought with much larger Forces from Makkah, led by Abu Sufyan ibn Harb. After initial successes, the Muslims were defeated and many companions of the Prophet were martyred.
