View of the Masjid Sayyidna Omar bin Al Khattab, as it was in 1947 when photographed by Mohammad Helmi. Originally built in the mid-15th century under the Mamluks, the mosque was named after Omar bin Al Khatab, a companion of the Prophet (PBUH) and the second Caliph of Islam, who reputedly performed the Eid prayers on this spot. The building was restored in the mid-19th century by the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Majid.
