This panoramic view of Madinah, with the Jabal Uhud ridge on the left, was photographed in the 1930s by H. St John Philby (known in Saudi Arabia as Sheikh Abdullah), a British Arabist, explorer and writer who spent much of his life in Saudi Arabia, travelling and photographing widely, and mapping hitherto unmapped areas.
